Seatbelt retainers.

Plan.

More photos below.

I've never liked having to practically throw my shoulder out of joint to reach my seatbelt.  I guess the Toyota engineers didn't either, that's why they installed seatbelt retainers in the 89 and up Supras.  I want to transplant these retainers into my car.  Hopefully it won't be too hard.

The Project.

I found a car in a junkyard that had the retainers and pulled the seatback apart to see what it would take to move one into mine.  I found that the 89 and up have an extra bracket welded onto the seat that my car does not.  this means that I will have to transplant the entire seatback into my car.  The first step was to remove the cloth on the seat.  Taking the seatback apart is not too hard.  I've had a problem with the bolster cutting through the cloth so, while I had the seatback out, I took a look at it.  I noticed that the bolster has a sharp edge.  I used a hammer to fold this edge over a little more, and then a bench grinder and file to smooth it out.  I also used a hot glue gun and some swatches from an old pair of jeans to reinforce the area worn through the foam.  Cut the foam to clear the bracket, reassemble the seatbacks, poke a couple of holes for the retainer screws and the job is done.

Difficulty.

1- The only real item is having to buy seatback frames since the mount is not part of the pre 89 seats.

The Problems.

1- The only problem I've had with this mod is that the seatbelt seems to pull through the retainer leaving the clip behind the retainer loop.  That's even more of a pain than not having the retainers at all.

The Payoff.

This upgrade was easy and relatively inexpensive.  Being able to smooth out the metal bolsters and knowing that it shouldn't cut through any new cloth I put on the seat makes having the seatbacks out well worth it.

The seatback is removed.

The two seatbacks for comparison (old on top).

Bolster edges smoothed out.

All done.
